Awesome Lead Sentences! This is a featured page

Many writers write well-crafted stories during writing block, we have discovered that many writers craft their stories by beginning them with a good lead sentence. I would like for my students and parents to begin a discussion about a good lead sentence you may have written to begin a story with and tell why you liked it. In my classroom, we will also post good lead sentences we have discovered from other writers and tell why we liked it. Hopefully, this will become a welcome tool that we can use to help us begin our stories. We would also like to invite anyone else in the community to join our wiki with their lead sentence. To make it easier to distinguish the lead sentence from your comment, I am requesting that you put your lead sentence in the color of your choice and your comment in black. Thank you.

It all started when Ma and Pa promised I could stay a spell with Grandma Mary, who lived a million miles away through the rough old Idaho mountains. This lead sentence is from Mailing May and Mrs. Blevins' class thought it was a good lead sentence because it named the characters, told the setting, told what she was doing, talking in the language of the time by saying, "stay a spell" to let the reader know the story takes place in the past around the year 1914. (About a hunderd years ago!)

Doesn't that just grab you...it pulls you into the story immediately by making connections with family...Ma and Pa...then Grandma. It peeked my curiosity by telling that Grandma lived a million miles away. I use to think my Grandma B lived a long distance away too...we had to travel on many highways, and off the main roads onto gravel roads, following tree lined backwoods. I found out later that is was only 2-3 miles off a major highway and just an hour away from our home. "Mountains"...now that's a picture for visualizing...steep, evergreened points reaching towards the sky with puffy clouds near their tops and a coolness that spellbounds you. badams
